The Internet Sourcing Community

It seems like Google changes daily now. Besides, it shows different options and different user interface for different people. As an example, some of us can select the option"show only visited pages" (or not visited) and others can't.

Google's advance search dialog is there but is hard to locate.

Google's advanced search dialogs for special searches - like books, patents, and images - still exist. But it is hard to locate them. (Searching on Bing for them is an option.) The new dialogs lack some search facets, like fitetypes (JPEG, BMP, etc.)  for image searches.

The Personal (the former Social) option in search is only available if you are logged into Gmail. At that point it's not quite clear what it does. However, if you are on Google+, the personalized results are loud and clear and show what your circles had to say about the subject.

Special characters are making their way into Google's index. It's not documented what is possible. The help page still says that they wouldn't be found. It's still true for searches like @ibm.com

Google's "semantic search" will not change SEO, in spite this post on Mashable. But SEO is definitely changing based on search being social by default. Semantic elements are not new on Google, either.

The tilde ~ has long been gone from the help page. Google is looking for synonyms without it more and more.

While Bing doesn't seem to be changing a whole lot, there's one sad fact is that the proximity search near: does very little. Try a few examples and you will see.

Of course, we should realize that people who use any advanced search operators or options are 0.001% of the general searching population. We should be happy that advanced Boolean search still exists on Google and on Bing.
