Searching for Resumes and personal websites using LinkedIn

LinkedIn has profiles, not resumes, and the profiles rarely have contact info in them. However quite a number of people post links to their resumes or to their sites that have much more information about them - including ways to reach them. How do you find those links? If you search for the word resume, it's likely to bring too many irrelevant pages. Here are a couple of suggestions:

1) On Google, search for
site:linkedin.com "my resume" or
site:linkedin.com "my cv" or
site:linkedin.com "my * resume"

(the last one will bring "my current resume", "my latest resume" etc.)

2) LinkedIn profiles have a websites section where many put links to their companies, sites, and also resumes.
On Google, search for
site:linkedin.com "websites resume" or
site:linkedin.com "websites * resume" or
site:linkedin.com "websites * * resume" or
site:linkedin.com "websites * * * resume" etc, or

site:linkedin.com "websites cv" or
site:linkedin.com "websites * cv" etc.

A similar search will lead you to the person's website.

Examples:

java "bay area" "websites * * * resume" site:linkedin.com brings up 30 results
java "bay area" "my resume" site:linkedin.com -answers has 62 results
java "bay area" "my website" site:linkedin.com -answers has 603 results

Any other suggestions on this?

This is very true. A profile does not contain personal contact information. This will be helpful in my daily searches. Is the format the same for Facebook and other SN sites?

Also I noticed you created your blog with Ning. Did you like this over Wordpress? Thanks for this site.
Irina,
I tried these and do not see the "resume" just the regular linkedin profile. At Google there are 3 choices: cache, Html, or regular link. None of them show me resumes with contact info. just the regular Linkedin bio. Am I missing it?
Thanks,
Joe
Hi Joe,

Thanks for your question. Yes, you are right that the results will be profiles; but most of these profiles will have links to real resumes.

Hi Richard,

To answer your first question: perhaps, it is a matter of trying this out (I haven't yet). :) If you try it please let us know what works.

As for Wordpress, yes, it's a very good and very flexible platform. Here is my blog: http://booleanstrings.wordpress.com/
Best,
Irina

When I use this pattern: java "bay area" "my resume" site:linkedin.com for one of my searched:

Comp & Benefits "PA" "my resume" site: linkedin.com, nothing comes up. What am I doing wrong?
Sally,

Nothing is wrong but perhaps your string can be modified to work better. Who are you trying to look for? Perhaps just finding profiles, not links to resumes will work for you?

FYI. Here's an article I wrote about sourcing on LI.

Great information, thanks for sharing!
Irina,

Here is something that is not really a boolean search string, but more of a "work around" for Linkedin that some might find helpful.
Ever find someone in Linkedin after dong a search that has the right title but the name is listed as "private"? They are just out of your network. Here is something you can try.

1. Bring up their profile in Linkedin. Note the URL at the top of the page.
2. Copy the number series in the URL that is just after "viewProfile=&key="
3. Go to Google and type in Linkedin SPACE and paste the number
4. Hit Enter

In a high number of instances, this will bring up the profile with the profile holders name.

Regards,
Matt Kerr
This is a great tip to know, thanks!

By the way, funny enough, these people can be found on Google (if their profile is public).

Matt-

Good info - there is also a quick way to find private profiles from LinkedIn - see Glen's article on www.booleanblackbelt.com
