Check out my article How to Build a Google CSE

I'd be interested to hear how these search engines work for you.

Add links to yours in the comments and we'll all try them out!

Thanks,

Hi Irina; first of all, great article, I have been playing around with the CSE's for the last few days and I have to say I am hooked!
I created a simple one here for searching LinkedIn in most of the major European countries.  The default search looks at the entire database but I have tabbed out the different countries.

It's a shame that it forces you to include at least one website in the sites otherwise you could have one engine that searched everything by adding boolean to each refinement.

I guess the real power for recruiters is comprehensively populating the synonym database with the synonyms for their industries/ sectors/ job titles etc.

Do you know if you can run a synonym for a whole phrase using the quotation marks?

Great tools.  My team had a question I hope you can answer.  With the Google Custom Search of Linkedin, does it search all profiles in the U.S. or just those within a certain degree?

Hi Jonathan,

This is excellent use of CSE's in your search on LinkedIn.

Here are some comments.

You can in fact have no sites included (remove the site you start with), or include something very wide - like all of *.com, *.edu, *.org (etc). You can also give preference to a site but search all of the web.

A synonym can be a word or a phrase. A "synonym" doesn't have to be a synonym is the usual sense. As an example, you can define synonyms for "consulting" as IBM, Accenture, Deloitte, etc.

Hi Bill,

The search engines do not know about your LinkedIn membership, so it doesn't know who's in your network. Google searches all of the info that is public.

Custom search engines use Google's index (i.e. they do not do extra searches).

One can create some interesting CSE's using this. (Just posted.)

Hi Irina,

Thank you for creating this magical tool. As you may aware I am based at UK and I am trying to get some result from UK but as you have built in US I am not getting any results from UK sites.

Can you please let me know how can I alter this sites to get some results from UK sites?

Thank you

Hi Gaurang

You can use Irina's International Search:

http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=009679435902400177945:psuoqnxowx8

you just have to start by entering the job title or skill you are looking for and then choose the "UK" Tab from the results.

Gaurang-

You can also xray the UK linkedin site-

Example for Google:

site:uk.linkedin.com title keywords location (inurl:pub OR inurl:in) -inurl:dir

Hi Irina -- thank you for sharing these tools. Everyone, if you missed Irina in our Google Custom Search Engines webinar on sourcecon.com last week, she was super helpful and she even provided a great follow-up post on how to create one. I hope you'll all consider participating in the SourceCon Challenge of creating a Custom Search Engine and use these resources while you craft your own! The prize is a free trip to SourceCon this fall in Silicon Valley, where Irina will also be speaking. Hope you'll participate -- the deadline to submit is this Friday!!

I created this and searched for Gary Cozin :)

Greetings Irina,

I have been having an on-going problem with CSEs when I add them to my iGoogle page they stop working get Error 403 your client doesn't have permission.  However I can click your links on this page they work fine.   I built one it worked for a while I added a few of these they worked in the beginning but now they give me the error.  Any advice?

Thanks,

Lana

Hi Lana,

Not sure what the problem might be. It's probably best to ask a question on their discussions forum.

It also makes sense to create backups of your engines as you go, to see what triggers changes.

Would you like to share your CSE here?
