<p>From this humble beginner sourcer's opinion, "Sourcing" is a whole universe that can monopolize your time without peer guidance. If you are fortunate to have outstanding co-workers to guide you in the right direction (thank goodness for my team) you are ahead of the learning curve. If you are not as fortunate to have multiple sources of knowledge and experience, it can be a bit overwhelming. That being said, I pose this question to the community:</p>

<p> </p>
<p>If you were sitting in front of a new sourcer, where would you have them start?</p>
<p> </p>
<p>My Answer:</p>
<p>1. Start from the basics. A simple google/bing search can get you in front of many helpful websites, communities, and information. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>2. Practice, practice, practice those boolean strings. <em><strong>"Perfect practice makes perfect."</strong></em> </p>
<p> </p>
<p>3. Understand that you are "consciously incompetent" and strive keep learning, researching and networking.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>4. Network. Use your social media to your advantage as a personal growth tool to keep you on point with where the industry is going, best practices, and your specific niche of the recruiting/staffing community.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>To all those veteran sourcers out there, feel free to critique my answer and let me know what you think!</p>

<div><b>The Sourcing Quiz</b></div>
<div>1. Suppose you want to search for resumes of people who might not be currently looking. How would you search for documents that were last indexed by Google more than two years ago?</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>2. A search on Google that includes this: “<i><b>*@ibm.com</b></i>” will return the pages that have at least one email address that belongs to somebody who works at IBM (yes/no; explain)</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>3. What will Google do if you include the word “not” (lower case) in your search string? Upper case (“NOT”)? How about Bing?</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>4. To look for special characters on Google, you need to put them inside the quotation marks. Example: “top 20%” will look for results that say top 20% (true/false).</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>5. What will Google search for if you include this in your string:</div>
<div><i>develop*</i></div>
<div>What about LinkedIn?</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>6. How would you search LinkedIn from Google (X-ray) to find database administrators from Canada? Note: your results must include profiles of people from Canada only and must not contain links other than profiles.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>7. What are the differences between searching for people on LinkedIn from Google by X-raying and searching using the LinkedIn people search dialog? Name as many as you can.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>8. There is a search box on the home page of Twitter. How would you search for tweets that ask questions about recruiting?</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>9. Suggest a search string on Google that will bring up YOUR profile as one of the results on the first page; do not use your name in the string.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>10. [Bonus question, to be used in case of a tie]: on major search engines, such as Google, you are restricted to review no more than 1,000 results for any given search string. What would you do to view 1,001 search results?</div>
<div><br/></div> Answers to the 10 questionstag:booleanstrings.ning.com,2010-01-28:2748775:Topic:308382010-01-28T19:42:53.239ZIrina Shamaevahttps://booleanstrings.ning.com/profile/IrinaShamaeva

If you want to only find profiles for people from the UK in LinkedIn, searching from Google, what would be the best search string?<br style="font-size: 1em; xg-p: static !important;"/><b>Answer: use </b><i><b>site:uk.linkedin.com</b></i> <b>as part of your string</b></span></div>
<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', Arial, clean, sans-serif; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;"><br style="font-size: 1em; xg-p: static !important;"/>2. Some people include the symbol <b style="font-size: 1em; xg-p: static !important;">@</b> in their searches for email addresses on Google. If you use the symbol <b style="font-size: 1em; xg-p: static !important;">@</b> in your search string on Google and then use the same string but change <b style="font-size: 1em; xg-p: static !important;">@</b>to <b style="font-size: 1em; xg-p: static !important;">?</b>, will the results be different?<br style="font-size: 1em; xg-p: static !important;"/><b>Answer: no difference.</b></span></div>
