Our - substantially reworked and improved in 2014 - Sourcing Certification Program now offers to take the Exam and Getting Certified independently of signing up for subscription to the interactive materials, as we have called them, "The SourceBook".

You would definitely be well prepared if you subscribe to the material. But if you feel ready and confident, you can give the Exam a try and become Certified. The Exams are offered monthly, at the end of each month. The next round is coming up at the end of August 2014, and we already have quite a few folks signed up for it.

For those who are curious, here are a few sample Exam questions. Please note: no answers will be provided to these; of course, you are welcome to compare the notes in the comments. The questions are not too difficult, but you'd need t do a bit of research for each one. The Exam has 60 questions to answer.

Q1) For the person whose work phone number is 413-794-3248, what is her work email address?

Q2) Find a page on the High Country Fusion Company website, listing the company's Australia staff. One of the people listed on the page does not have a LinkedIn account. What is the last name of that person?

Q3) One of the Engineering staff listed in this Directory has a work phone number publicly shared on his LinkedIn profile. What is that number?

Q4) The site http://doleta.gov has an Excel file (the xlsx type) that contains a long list of professionals with the names, company names, titles, emails, phone numbers, and addresses. How many records does the list have?

Q5) Complete the search string by replacing the ??? by a word, to create a Google search for profiles of members of Florida Direct Marketing Association:

site:fdma.org/???

Q6) Which of the following search strings on Google will find not only the pages with the word Programmer, but also some pages with of its synonyms?

Programmer

~Programmer

Programmer OR Developer OR Engineer

Any one of the above will work

That's it for now! Additionally, you can test your Sourcing knowledge on the site and get a response from an auto-checker.

At the recent Sourcing Summits NZ and Australia I asked the audience to name some cases where web pages would not be found by Google. Examples provided included: "some people are not online" (at all!) and "if I am logged in to my bank, I hope Google doesn't find this info".

Further, we agreed, that if anyone is logged-in to a member site (whether paid or not), then the pages seen by that individual contain "inside" data, often personalized to the member, and therefore, in most cases, cannot be found by Google.

Another example brought up was "a page with search results", using a search engine, or using any site providing search. Those results are pulled onto one page just for us to look at them that once. The pages with search results are usually short-lived; Google will not find them.

There are a few more general categories of web pages, that Google will not find, not covered by the above. One case to remember is that webmasters can tell Google to stay away from some pages. Websites can prevent Google from indexing portions of the sites, by providing directives in the file named robots.txt. Google will respect the rules.

It's not true that Google can find "most of it" either (as someone said they'd hope). Here's what the big picture looks like:

(By the way saying "Deep Web search on Google", an expression I heard from an American colleague -who also claimed good skills in that - is not right. Deep Web is, by definition, what Google can't find.)

Of course, Google finds LOTS and is worth extensively using for research.

It's important, however, to straighten the expectations about what can be found and what can't. Here's a specific case that may not be clear upfront. Even if you do not have to log into a site - some of the site's pages, dynamically created in response to a search, or, more generally, pages, pulling out from a database and including some info "dynamically", just to show the page, may not be found by Google.

EXAMPLE

As an example, let's consider a search for corporate members on the Recruitment Association RCSA

Sure enough, the page depicted above is "constructed dynamically" - and will not be found by Google.

Let's also look at one of the results:

This page, while being "just" a listing page for a member, cannot be found by Google either! None of the four member listing pages found in the search above, can be found by Google. If you are in doubt, you can try searching for them: site:membershipcentre.rcsa.com.au "absoluteit.co.nz"

Generally, if you see a question mark ? in a page's URL, like for the page above, chances are split in terms of Google finding the page. It may, it may not; it depends. (We'll go into investigating a bit deeper in a future post.)

The moral of the story is: if it's not straightforward whether a site can be "fully" X-Rayed for content, it is always a good idea to try searching both by X-Raying and "internally". You might be finding more results by combining both ways. In the RCSA example above, internal searches will provide about 98% listings that X-Ray won't.

Following up on the post Monitoring companies for staff who leave by James Mayes and What Will Replace Linkedin Signal? by Viveka von Rosen, I'd like to point to ways to track LinkedIn profile changes, using Google.

Sure enough, LinkedIn has profiles, Google has pages, and telling Google how to look for specific information on profiles involves some cryptic Boolean syntax. But we have done it, and some things can be done quite easily.

The approach explained in an example below can be expanded and modified to track quite a few things.

Let's take a look at this search:

<a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Awww.linkedin.com+"2..200+people+have+recommended"+"registered+nurse"+Texas" target="_blank">site:www.linkedin.com "2..200 people have recommended" "registered nurse" Texas

(add your own keyword variations to the part in bold).

This is a search for people with anywhere from 2 to 200 recommendations. The added keywords narrow it down. (I do not mean that the above is "the" way to search for RN's in TX, but it is a very good place to start.)

Now, in the Google search dialog, let's select the "search tools", narrow it down to the past month, and sort by date:

When we sort by date, we see the results, that have recently been indexed by Google and got new information around the search terms. In our case, we find the profiles of the people who have, most likely, requested and added recommendations to their LinkedIn profiles. These professionals may be open to new opportunities.

Setting a Google alert with that search above is likely to inform us of the profiles where the number of the recommendations has shifted.

This doesn't provide a perfect way to track profile changes for a number of reasons. Though Google is very fast, it may take it some time to come to a profile for re-indexing. Though the majority of LinkedIn members keep public profiles, which is the default, some people may manually adjust what is visible. If we wanted to view perfect results with the RN's in Texas and nobody else (which I usually don't worry too much about; nothing is wrong having false positives as long as it is easy to ignore them), we may want to make a few changes to the search. Some people may get recommendations without having any plans to move. However, this is an excellent way to find or be notified about these changes and it can be fruitful to go over the results.

This search can be modified to see if a specific company has few or has many employees that are getting new recommendations, perhaps thinking of moving. This can be used as a CI (Competitive Intelligence) tool.

Try this, for example:

site:www.linkedin.com "2..200 people have recommended" "at zynga"

Now, here is your turn to design some other Google alerts tracking profile changes.

If you would like to learn to source like a pro and master multiple tricks like the one above, sign up for the last round of the People Sourcing Certification Program, coming up shortly to the Internet near you.
LinkedIn Contacts Have Just Doubled For Youtag:booleanstrings.ning.com,2013-06-13:2748775:Topic:1054772013-06-13T17:13:59.243ZIrina Shamaevahttps://booleanstrings.ning.com/profile/IrinaShamaeva

The new LinkedIn Contacts feature is buggy but it's opening up incredible people sourcing possibilities.

The terminology "contacts" and "connections" may be somewhat confusing. The all-new LinkedIn Contacts system allows LinkedIn members to merge the information about their contacts on several systems: 1) LinkedIn itself, 2) Gmail, 3) Yahoo mail, 4) Outlook, and several more sources.

Here's why this is cool:

1. You could create a Gmail account just for adding lists of people, therefore effectively merging any lists (being, for example, lists of a professional association members you'd locate on the web, or lists of people you find in Jigsaw or Zoominfo) with the member data on LinkedIn, no matter what your personal network is like. The merge is done using email addresses as the unique identifiers.

2. For people whom you add from a different account, such as Google/Gmail, LinkedIn creates a LinkedIn-alike "profile", if it can't merge the imported data with its own. Therefore it creates uniformity of the presentation of professional profiles for people, no matter inside or outside of LinkedIn, for you, as in this screenshot below.

This is not a member profile, but the profile of a contact I have added, who is not present on LinkedIn, or at least is not registered on LinkedIn with the given email address:
3. Here's the coolest part. You can now search across groups of people who have been merged as external lists, on their names, titles, companies, and locations. This is a capability that has been implemented in the (cool but expensive) Talent Pipeline a while ago.

Here is what this search may look like. The colored "in" icons point to my connections, the grayed out "in" icons point to people with whom I am not connected. The search results will show all the matching LinkedIn profiles, even for people outside of my network, as long as there was an email address match while merging.

The search is done across all of the Google-added people, but the search facets are applied to the LinkedIn data.

Here is an example of how this may be used.

Step 1. Clear out your gmail-merged contacts if you have any.

Step 2. Locate a list of people (say, get a list of members of a professional association). Names and email addresses is enough information to start with. Actually, even the names are not that necessary.

Step 3. Upload the list to a gmail account.

Step 4. Merge/connect the gmail account using the new Contacts

Now you can search across this list of people in terms of their LinkedIn data: where they live, which companies they currently work for, and which job titles they have. To search, you would need to use "Google contacts" as the "Source", as in the screenshot above. The search itself is quite different from before.

WOW. This is incredible - and available for free, with any LinkedIn account.

If you try this out, get ready to be patient. There are numerous bugs. All the numbers shown are wrong, and there's lots more to complain about.

The less powerful but also quite wonderful upload-to-invite functionality that has served us for years is mostly broken now.

But this stuff is better.
