Simple String Search

I am relatively new to Boolean Search: I can do basic LinkedIn X-Ray searching in geographic area like "Greater Atlanta Area" but am having trouble with specific location search such as "within 20 miles of zip code X"? Some of the advanced concepts I can pick up/deduce but this simple search string is throwing me for a loop.

Going to the 'Advanced Search' link on your LinkedIN home page will get you drop down boxes to put in a zip code & how many miles around that zip you want to search. Just go to your LI home page, change the search box to 'People', click on the 'Advanced Search' link next to the box. Go down the page & fill in your search criteria - you will see a zip code box.

Let me clarify my situation: I am trying to do a LinkedIn X-Ray from Google i.e:

 

site:linkedin.com (sales AND automotive) "within 20 miles of zipcode X"

 

The underlined portion is where I am having difficulty. My new manager has asked me to come up with a search string outside the LinkedIn platform and I don't want to let her down. Any other suggestions?

You cannot do it via xraying LI since zip code ranges do not show up on LI profiles. You can try searches for resumes

 example:

inurl:resume | intitle:resume keywords title 10001.10100 (ny OR "new york") -job -jobs -apply -submit

 

 

the 2 dots between numbers tells Google to bring back a range of numbers. So the 2 dots between 10001.10100 signifies a range of zips between those 2 numbers for example.

Tom - the best thing you can do is find the linkedIn regions around the area you are looking to search and enter that into Google string. With LinkedIn, as Gary indicated, zip code searches are not possible from google - but localized regjonal searches can be done. The way you get the region to enter is by doing a sample search in LinkedIn.

 

If you don't want to hassle with learning all the regions, download and try ResumeGrabber JobSuite.

It can get you close to what you want without having to learn anything new.

Chandra- thank you for the input. Your suggestion was going to be my next strategy- for local (Atlanta area) searches I know the neighboring suburb names and can work that way. As I will be searching outside the region I will give ResumeGrabber a trial.

Sometimes X-Ray/Boolean searches work- but sometimes old fashioned search techniques offer the best avenue for results.
