This year has been a rough one for fans of RSS. LinkedIn eliminated RSS feeds for groups in March. Twitter depreciated feeds in July breaking many hearts and blog widgets. Google Reader was shut down on July 1st followed by Google Alerts as they removed the option of RSS output. Public outcry was loud, but in the end, these corporations want you to visit their website to consume information.

The good news is that RSS (Atom, XML, and similar formats) are here to stay. If anything, these near real-time feeds are in greater demand as we become accustomed to the ideas of text messaging, instant messaging, PUSH notifications, and API services. Whether you appreciate them as a timesaving technology, data analysis opportunities, or speed of implementation, I want to help you become a RSS horticulturalist.

Research your environment

Anyone can find the Sourceon feed, but I am concerned with candidate profiles, social media, and competitive intelligence. Lance Haun wrote briefly about Talkwalker in April after the demise of Google Alerts RSS, but the tool deserves more attention after some hindsight.

Talkwalker has both free and paid tiers that scour the web and provide some of the quickest updates available. Advanced Boolean logic used is impressivewith Title, Site, Wildcard, and Proximity options familiar to some of us. Free accounts are limited to up to 100 alerts with each query holding up to 10 elements (keyword, a group of keywords).

Gather your seeds

Once you create a few queries, you can click on the RSS icon for each and save the resulting URL. Talkwalker has two other nice option to export to excel, or collect one single combined feed for all saved alerts by clicking on the top RSS icon (shown below).

Just as any recruiter worth a cent would never rely on one source of candidates, you will want to find many other seeds for this metaphor. I have listed many great sources of RSS content in the “Water and Feed” section below.

Planting

ContentGems is a dual purpose tool that can help discover content like Talkwalker, but its real value lies in its ability to precisely filter and search across many feeds. Easily plant your RSS feeds and connect to twitter to view your timeline as a source. Free accounts have up to 20 custom RSS sources, 1 twitter account, and 2 “interests” with up to 30 keywords each. Sources can be bundled together to keep your garden organized.

If you wanted to use CG for social media curration, they have excellent sharing options directly to your streams, a buffer-like publishing cue, Hootsuite app integration, and even an RSS output for blog publication. Green Thumb Tip: Keep away pests by editing your account settings with proper time zone and to spray the “sharing bar” circa 2008 with DDT.

Water and Feed

All plants must be nurtured and fed so they can reach their potential. Adding quality, RSS feeds from these sources will grow your garden.

Google Search Results using API – free up to 100 searches per day / 200 if you enable billing

Blekko search engine converts any search result by adding /rss to the end of the search

Socialmention &f=rss

Craigslist resume search for B2B Sales person in Seattle, add &format=rss

Track changes on any websites using changedetection

Create feeds on webpages that don’t offer RSS with Page2RSS so you know when the next big Marketing or Advertising Conference in the US is announced

Your LinkedIn Network Updates

Your Facebook Notifications

Other Facebook feeds not official

Amit Agarwal is a genius and has listed many other social feeds here, but this page lists the old twitter API v1 that no longer works. The updated method described here works to retrieve any public twitter account as a feed.

Maintenance

Gardens do require maintenance. Continually refine your feeds. Cooperate to come up with creative uses blending competitive intelligence, networking, reviews, and sentiment. Websites can sometimes wilt or bloom without warning, so you will need to troubleshoot broken links in a standard RSS reader as well. I use theoldreader, but many great solutions exist.

Enjoy

This smart garden method has the positive side effect of a clean inbox. Give yourself 10 minutes each week to review results and stay on the lookout for new sources. The time you will save not visiting individual websites, you can spend in a real garden, appreciating all the lessons nature has to offer.

VOTC, WOTC, & THE AMERICAN JOBS ACT

If you are a HR professional, or responsible for hiring at your organization, chances are that you are familiar with WOTC or the Work Opportunity Tax Credit. This tax credit is common for companies to receive when they hire job seekers who have received government assistance. Last year, Obama signed into law a different type of tax credit for Veterans and military what is referred to as the VOTC or the Veterans Opportunity Tax Credit. Also know as the Returning Heroes Tax Credit, it is designed to for companies to receive a tax credit of up to $5,600 per veteran. The Wounded Warriors Tax Credit is another piece of this program. Companies who hire disabled veterans can receive a maximum credit of $9,600 per veteran. These are all pieces of the American Jobs Act which was signed into law November 21, 2011.

While programs like the American Jobs Act are important, recruiters, hiring managers, and military members have a hard time understanding as well as articulating the job experiences and skills of a soldier. Not sure what I mean? Here’s the inside scoop.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS VS THE MOS… WHAT’S AN MOS?

The military has job titles that are codes called MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). There are plenty of sites on the web that can translate these job specialties from military lingo to English and tell you the jobs for which veterans would be best suited. This has raised the question, “Is that the employer’s responsibility, or the responsibility of the applicant to do this research?” My answer is both. If businesses want to tap into the overlooked and under-employed veteran market, they should conduct some research and know which veterans to target. On the flip side of that coin, veterans should know that civilians don’t speak in acronyms. They should research their own MOS and translate it on a resume in order to find companies that require those skills. Too easy.

DON’T OVERLOOK THE IMPLIED RESPONSIBILITIES

Implied responsibilities are included in every job, from accountability of equipment to training of subordinates and risk management. The military loves to get the most out of their tax dollars. Here is one great reference where responsibilities are broken down by job (MOS) and position. For example, my duty description is below:

25F Node Center Supervisor

Serves as a Node Center Supervisor in a tactical Mobile Subscriber Equipment (MSE) area signal platoon supporting the Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC); responsible for the readiness and accountability of 18 tactical vehicles, 12 MSE assemblages and 12 power generation units all valued in excess of $11,000,000 dollars; responsible for the health, welfare, training, morale and professional development of two Non-Commissioned Officers and seven Soldiers.

From this, you can derive that I am responsible for a ton of expensive equipment, two supervisors and seven employees. Easy as pie, right? But take a look at the last responsibility: “responsible for… professional development…” Where else is a leader required to groom his or her subordinates? How amazing is it to have a built-in system so if someone leaves an organization, he or she has groomed another employee to take his or her place? Just a little food for thought to digest.

BACKGROUND CHECK MADE EASY: WITHOUT UPSETTING DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY

Not every veteran has a good record. Let’s be honest. There are always a few bad apples in every bunch (or a few bad recruiters that recruited the wrong person to don the uniform, but we won’t go there… yet). Getting any information about a prospective candidate from the military is a slow process. Have you ever seen how fast pond water moves? That’s about the equivalent. How exactly do you complete a background check for a veteran that left the service from Japan, Italy, Germany or any of the other bases around the world? That’s a simple fix – ask for his or her discharge paperwork (DD-214 federal service or NGB-22 National Guard Service) and get educated on how to read it here. These documents contain Reenlistment Eligibility Codes (or RE Codes) that say why that veteran was discharged, and if the military would take him or her back. It is safe to say that if a candidate has an RE-4 (negative discharge code), some additional questions should be asked – and you should trust your instincts. Veterans should also make sure that they have copies of this paperwork. If they lose it, they can get copies here.

This small amount of information can open doors to a whole world of candidates that have been passed over time and time again. As a country, we should find a way to reach out to our veteran community, but many employers haven’t made the effort. Join me in the fight to decrease unemployment among our veterans and get them back to work.
How to Find People in an Area - Location Sourcing with Google, Twitter and LinkedIntag:booleanstrings.ning.com,2013-07-25:2748775:BlogPost:1083412013-07-25T16:00:07.000ZShane McCuskerhttps://booleanstrings.ning.com/profile/ShaneMcCusker

My webinar this is all about Location based Candidate Sourcing. Very often my sourcing demonstrations find candidates in big cities with big populations but what happens when you want candidates in a remote area with perhaps only a few thousand people in the population. This is a common problem and made even more difficult when the thousands of candidates from the big population centres come up first in searches of even worse the popular social sites wrongly claim that the remote candidate your looking for is based in a big city.

I recently ran a webinar on Google Plus for Recruiters and talked about the problems of finding Google profiles in a particular area. Glen Cathy had previously written on this topic and I developed a search tool to help with location based sourcing on Google Plus. This works quite well in finding profiles clearly identified with an area but the problem remains that very many profiles aren’t identified with an area and so are not found.

The essence of Location based sourcing is the same as skill based sourcing. That is, it is up the sourcer to think laterally about the problem and find the clues to complete the search.

I started my thought process by considering the profiles of people I know are in a remote location to see what it is that ties them to this place. Interestingly this approach is more likely to highlight the mis-information that appears on peoples profiles and is perhaps a lesson in what not to look for. LinkedIn, for example, list the location of a profile right under their name. With regard to remote locations this is probably more harm than good. LinkedIns areas are very wide and many are related to a main city rather than the much wider area actually covered. For example every LinkedIn profile with a Northern Ireland post code LinkedIn claims they are based in the city of Belfast.

I wondered how large some of these LinkedIn regions actually are and so with further research I found that South Africa, all 1,200,000 Km2 of it, is covered by less than 50 Linkedin areas. This certainly raises concerns about how much trust can be placed in LinkedIns information.

LinkedIn does allow post code radius searching and in countries with accurate geographically based post code systems this works well provided the person has told LinkedIn the post code where they live. (Many haven’t) After that the search becomes more interesting and relies on more subtle clues.

The benefit of searching a remote location is that there is a limit to the places you can look. A small amount of research can generally find most alternative employers, education establishments and local community information. All this is fantastic with regard to finding profiles associated with any of these entities. This is true of Linkedin and many other social platforms and web sites.

The beauty of social recruiting techniques is that today it can be a very subtle reference that can connect a person to a place. Perhaps Twitter can best demonstrate this as so many twitter accounts have a physical location a simple follow, re-tweet or comment on a particular account ties someone to this self forming geographical community. Simply by looking at the followers of a local twitter account is enough to find leads. The people you first find may not have the skill fit you’re looking for but given a small geographical area then almost certainly know someone who does.
